Aurubis is one of the first companies to have successfully invented and invested in a hydrogen-ready industrial process. Since summer 2024, two new anode furnaces have been available at the Hamburg plant, which could be converted from natural gas to hydrogen as a reducing gas at any time. Dr. Holger Klaassen will explain why they are still operated with natural gas and what framework conditions would be necessary for a final conversion.
With extensive expertise in hydrogen, energy, and climate policy, Dr. Klaassen has been at the helm of CO2 management and energy procurement at Aurubis AG since April 2024. His previous decade in Hamburg’s and the Federal Government’s ministerial administration adds a rich perspective to his insights.
